Tangier to Chefchaouen: Day Trip or Overnight to the Blue City

The quick answer: distance and time

Chefchaouen sits 115 km southeast of Tangier in the Rif mountains. The drive is about two and a half hours each way on decent roads, climbing as you go. A standard day trip leaves Tangier around 9am and gets you back by early evening — call it 9 to 11 hours all in, with roughly four to five on the ground.

How to get there (and what it costs)

1. 1Private driver or guided tour — the easy choice. Door-to-door, stop for photos in the mountains, no timetable. A private day trip from Tangier runs roughly 800–1,400 dirhams for the car, split between your group.
2. 2CTM bus — cheap and reliable at around 40–80 dirhams each way, but the schedule is rigid and the last bus back is early, which makes a same-day return tight. Better if you’re staying over.
3. 3Grand taxi — a shared Mercedes that leaves when full; cheap and local, but cramped and not built for a relaxed day.

For a day trip, a private car wins on time — you’re not the one watching the clock for the last bus. For an overnight on a budget, the CTM bus is fine.

Why Chefchaouen is blue

Nobody fully agrees. The popular story credits Jewish refugees who settled here in the 1930s and painted the walls blue as a symbol of sky and heaven. Others say the blue keeps mosquitoes away, or simply keeps houses cool. The truthful answer is that it’s now partly tradition and partly tourism — the town repaints because the blue is the draw. Whatever the reason, it photographs exactly as well as you hope.

What to do once you’re there

Chefchaouen is small and the joy is mostly aimless, but a few things earn the effort:

• Wander the medina — the whole point. The blue lanes, the painted steps, the cats. Get lost on purpose; it’s too small to stay lost.
• Plaza Uta el-Hammam — the main square, with the red-walled 15th-century kasbah and a ring of cafés for a long mint tea.
• The Spanish Mosque — a 20-minute walk up the hill for the postcard view over the blue rooftops, best at sunset.
• Rooftop lunch — half the restaurants have a terrace; take one and watch the town from above.

Got more than a day? Akchour

If you’re staying over, spend the second day at the Akchour waterfalls, a 45-minute drive into Talassemtane National Park. It’s a moderate few-hours walk along a river to a big waterfall, with the natural rock arch of God’s Bridge on a longer branch. Green, cool, and a complete change of pace from the blue lanes. This is the bit day-trippers never see.

Day trip or overnight? Our honest take

A day trip is fine. An overnight is better, and not by a little. The blue medina between roughly 4pm and 10am — after the tour buses leave and before they return — is a different, quieter, far more photogenic place, and you’ll get it with the cats and the locals instead of a queue. Rooms are cheap by European standards, and it breaks up the long drive.
